What is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person thinks, communicates and interacts with others.

It is typically diagnosed in early childhood, but its effects can persist throughout a person’s life. Not all individuals with Autism will display the same symptoms or severity of symptoms.

More people are being diagnosed with Autism as adults. This is because we know more about how gender and environment shape how individuals experience the condition.

Whilst diagnostic manuals refer to Autism Spectrum Disorder, there is increasing recognition that Autism is best understood as a condition, rather than a disorder.

Our Autism assessment process

What to expect

Autism assessments are carried out by one of our Psychiatrists or Clinical Psychologists, with support from our wider team. We follow an evidence-based protocol with three stages. The first is an initial interview where we gather a detailed background of your medical and symptom history. The second is a structured interview in which we complete a questionnaire called the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised). The third is an observational session where we will ask you to complete a series of activities – this is called the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule).

Following your assessment sessions you will be invited to an outcome meeting in which your clinician will be able to share with you their findings on whether a diagnosis of autism best explains the challenges you have been facing. You will receive a detailed report of their findings and recommendations for next steps.

Frequently asked questions

If you have a question that isn’t listed, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

It’s normal to be unsure whether or not an Autism assessment is right for you. This is why we offer free 15-minute discovery calls with a psychiatrist. It’s your chance to discuss why you think you may have Autism with a professional, who will be able to tell you if an assessment may be beneficial.

You will be assessed by a Consultant Psychiatrist. This is a senior mental health doctor who is specially qualified to diagnose neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism.

We offer both in-person and virtual appointments.

In-person appointments are available in central London and virtual appointments are conducted via a secure online link which is sent to you ahead of your appointment.

Following your booking enquiry we aim to see you as soon as it is suitable. We suggest taking some time between your booking enquiry and your assessment to complete your pre-assessment questionnaires.

You will no receive your diagnosis immediately. You will be invited to attend an outcome meeting where your clinician will talk you through whether you meet the criteria for Autism, alongside recommendations for next steps.

Following your assessment we will discuss your case with at least one other clinician. This is to ensure the quality of your assessment and to check that they agree with our findings. Once this discussion has taken place, we will finalise your report and treatment recommendations.

We aim to get this to you with 2-3 weeks of your assessment.

Medication may be suggested as part of your treatment plan. As a psychiatrist-led service we can prescribe medications. You may hear clinicians talk about ‘medication titration’ – this is the process of gradually adjusting the dosage of medication until maximum therapeutic benefits are achieved. We will work with you to manage this process, after which we can explore a shared care plan with your GP.

We had an excellent experience with MOAI Health when our son underwent an ADHD assessment, and I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending them to other parents. We had become concerned about his concentration and felt that a professional assessment would help us better understand what he was experiencing and, importantly, what we could do to support him. From the outset, the whole process with MOAI Health was extremely professional, efficient and reassuring. The assessment itself was conducted in person by a professional who was excellent with our son. He was made to feel comfortable throughout, and the clinician managed to engage with him in a way that felt straightforward and stress-free. Everything was explained clearly to us, both during the assessment and afterwards, and we came away with a much clearer understanding of our son's needs. The detailed report we received was comprehensive, clearly written and included a range of useful recommendations to help us support our son going forward. It has also been very helpful to share the report with his school, giving them a better understanding of his needs and how they can support him. Overall, we found MOAI Health to be professional, knowledgeable, efficient and genuinely helpful. The whole process was pain-free, and we now have a clear diagnosis together with practical guidance on the next steps. I would certainly recommend MOAI Health to any parent who is considering an ADHD assessment for their child. They made the process straightforward from start to finish and provided us with exactly the clarity and practical advice we were looking for. A thoroughly excellent service.

The clinic has been so very supportive of my daughter who at age 17 was diagnosed with dual form ADHD. Dr Singh and then Dr Davey could not have been more helpful, and have been warm, clinically insightful and professional at all times. Thank you all for your assistance in getting her through her exams and off to her chosen University in London. Your secretarial staff are also excellent!
