Occupational Therapy

MOAI Occupational Therapists support children, young people and adults to build the skills, confidence and routines they need for everyday life.

Occupational Therapy can help people overcome practical challenges that affect daily life, independence, education, work and wellbeing.

Children may benefit from support if they are finding school difficult, struggling to manage their emotions, or finding everyday activities overwhelming. Adults may find Occupational Therapy helpful when returning to work, managing everyday responsibilities, or rebuilding routines following illness, burnout, therapy, or a period of recovery.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy helps people of all ages develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for everyday life. This can include activities such as dressing, eating, attending school, working, caring for others, and enjoying hobbies.

Taking a whole-person approach, our therapists look beyond a diagnosis to understand how physical, emotional, cognitive, and environmental factors affect daily life. They provide practical support to help people achieve their goals.

Support can help children, young people, and adults across many areas of life, including:

Physical

Support may focus on movement, coordination, balance, fine motor skills, handwriting and sensory processing, helping individuals participate more confidently in everyday activities at home, school, work and play.

Cognitive

Support may focus on attention, memory, organisation, problem-solving and daily routines, helping individuals feel more confident and independent in everyday life.

Emotional and social

Support may focus on emotional regulation, confidence and social skills, helping people build positive relationships and feel more connected in everyday life.

Environment

Support may include exploring how home, school, work or community environments affect daily life, and identifying practical adjustments that promote participation and independence.

Occupational Therapy for Children and Young People

Our Occupational Therapists take a holistic, child-centred approach to understand each young person’s strengths, needs and experiences.

Through a structured assessment, we build a clear understanding of the challenges they may be facing and identify the support that will be most helpful. This may include conversations with parents or carers, evidence-based assessment tools, and play-based observations to explore how a child engages with everyday activities. Using this information, we develop a personalised support plan tailored to their individual needs, helping them build skills, confidence, independence and participation in daily life.

Areas we may explore include:

This includes coordination, movement, strength, and hand skills used in everyday activities.

How sensory information is experienced and responded to in different environments.

Understanding routines such as dressing, eating, and self-care.

Understanding focus, task completion, and the ability to manage daily demands.

Identifying how emotions are understood, expressed, and managed.

Observing communication, relationships, and participation in social situations.

Observing the visual skills needed for learning, reading, writing, and everyday tasks.

Understanding skills such as planning, organisation, memory, and problem-solving.

Tailored support plans

Following an assessment, your Occupational Therapist will create a personalised support plan tailored to your child’s individual strengths and needs.

The plan will focus on building skills, confidence, independence, and participation in everyday life.

Sensory-only assessments

Our sensory-only assessments are designed for children and young people who may be experiencing difficulties with sensory processing and regulation. Your Occupational Therapist will work with you to understand your child’s sensory needs. This may include discussions with parents or carers, observations and sensory profile assessments. They will then provide practical recommendations to help your child participate more comfortably in everyday activities. You will receive:

  • A detailed sensory profile report for which can be shared with other family members and your child’s school

  • An actionable ‘sensory diet’ with guidance on how your young person can engage with their senses throughout the day

  • A pack for your child with the important information they may find useful

Occupational Therapy for Adults

Our Occupational Therapists support adults to build the skills, routines, and confidence needed to manage everyday life more independently.

Using a holistic, person-centred assessment, we explore the areas of life you may be finding challenging and develop practical strategies tailored to your needs, goals, and priorities.

Support is collaborative and focused on helping you engage more comfortably in the activities that matter most to you, whether at home, work, education, or in your community.

You may find Occupational Therapy helpful if you are:

  • Preparing for therapy or additional psychological support

  • Recovering from mental health difficulties and rebuilding daily routines

  • Returning to work, education, or independent living

  • Struggling with attention, organisation, motivation, or time management

  • Looking for support with sensory processing related to Autism or ADHD

  • Managing stress, burnout, overwhelm, or fatigue

  • Wanting support with emotional regulation and coping strategies

  • Adjusting to life changes, transitions, or periods of recovery
