A guide to talking therapies

There are many different types of therapy, each offering a unique approach to understanding and overcoming life’s challenges.

You don’t need to know which therapy is right for you before reaching out. Our clinicians will take the time to understand your needs and help you find an approach that feels like the right fit.

Therapy that’s tailored to you

Our person-centred approach focuses on you as an individual — your experiences, challenges, goals, and what matters most to you. We work collaboratively to understand your needs and provide support at a pace that feels comfortable and manageable.

All of our therapies are evidence-based and recommended by organisations such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). While we may use specific therapeutic approaches, every treatment plan is personalised to ensure the support you receive feels relevant, effective, and meaningful.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based talking therapy that explores the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It is based on the idea that the way we think about situations can influence how we feel and respond.

CBT helps identify unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour that may be contributing to difficulties. Together with your therapist, you’ll develop practical strategies to challenge these patterns and build healthier ways of coping.

It is one of the most widely researched therapies and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for a range of mental health difficulties.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based talking therapy that helps you build a meaningful life while developing a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings.

Rather than trying to get rid of unwanted thoughts or emotions, ACT focuses on accepting their presence, responding to them with greater flexibility, and taking action in line with your values and goals.

ACT can help you step back from unhelpful thinking patterns, improve emotional resilience, and focus on what matters most to you. It is commonly used to support difficulties such as anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, and life transitions.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is an evidence-based talking therapy that helps you develop a kinder, more compassionate relationship with yourself. It is particularly helpful when self-criticism, shame, or feelings of inadequacy are contributing to emotional difficulties.

CFT explores how patterns of self-criticism develop and supports you to respond to challenges with greater understanding, balance, and self-compassion.

It may be helpful for a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and experiences of shame.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy is based on the idea that the stories we tell about ourselves influence how we understand our experiences and what we believe is possible.

By exploring these stories together, you can develop new perspectives, reconnect with your strengths and values, and create a more empowering understanding of yourself and your life.

It may be helpful for difficulties linked to identity, self-esteem, life changes, relationships, and feeling stuck in unhelpful patterns.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy designed to help people process difficult experiences and move forward from the emotional impact they may have had.

Through a structured approach that includes bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, EMDR helps the brain reprocess memories in a way that can reduce distress and support recovery.

It can be particularly helpful for trauma, anxiety, distressing memories, and persistent emotional responses.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) helps people build the skills needed to manage overwhelming emotions, improve relationships, and navigate difficult situations more confidently.

By balancing acceptance with positive change, DBT supports emotional regulation, distress tolerance, effective communication, and mindfulness.

It may be helpful for people experiencing intense emotions, impulsive behaviours, relationship difficulties, self-harm, or ongoing mood instability.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy helps you explore how past experiences and relationships may shape your current thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Together, you and your therapist will develop a deeper understanding of recurring patterns and the impact they may have on your wellbeing, relationships, and sense of self.

It can be particularly helpful for relationship difficulties, anxiety, low mood, identity concerns, and long-standing emotional challenges.

Systemic Therapy

Systemic Therapy helps people understand how their relationships and the wider systems around them, such as family, work, or social networks, can affect their wellbeing.

By exploring patterns of communication and interaction, it supports new ways of understanding difficulties and building healthier relationships.

It may be helpful for relationship difficulties, family concerns, communication challenges, and ongoing interpersonal stress.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy helps people understand long-standing patterns in thoughts, feelings, and relationships that may have developed earlier in life.

By exploring where these patterns come from and how they affect everyday experiences, it supports lasting change, healthier coping strategies, and improved emotional wellbeing.

It can be particularly helpful for low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and recurring emotional challenges that feel difficult to overcome.
